The First Bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville, Monsignor Adolph Marx was born in Cologne, Germany, and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, USA., at 25 years of age on May 2, 1940.
Chancellor of the named Diocese of Corpus Christi, aged 41, Marx was appointed its auxiliary by Pope Pius XII, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Citrus on October 9, 1956, from Bishop Mariano Simon Garriga, assisted by Bishops John Joseph Krol and Charles Garrett Maloney.
When the See of Brownsville, Texas, was erected on July 10, 1965, Marx was appointed its First Bishop by Pope Paul VI.
Shortly after he was installed as bishop on September 2, of that year, he left for Rome to attend the meetings of the Second Vatican Council. While in Europe, he paid a visit to his native Cologne. It was there, that on November 1, 1965, he passed suddenly away after suffering a heart attack, aged 50.
His body was flown back to the United States and buried at the entrance of the Cathedral Church of the Immaculate Conception of Brownsville.
