By the time of his demise, Msgr. Paul-Louis Carrière, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Laval, France, was one of the oldest Roman Catholic prelates in the world, following Bishops Antoine Nguyên Van Thien of Viêtnam, Antonio Rosario Mennonna of Italy and Francis Hong Yong-ho of South Korea.
Born in Châlons sur Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France, on March 30, 1908, he studied at the Diocesan Seminary of Châlons and later at the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome. Ordained to the priesthood at the age of 23, at the Châlons Cathedral on July 8, 1931, Carrière was deported to Germany during the Second World War and was imprisoned between 1940 and 1945.
Immediately following his ordination, Carrière was assigned as vicar to the parish of St-Pierre St-Paul d'Epernay, where he served until July of 1947, when he was named episcopal chaplain and vicar of Notre-Dame d'Epernay. In August 1950, he was assigned as curate and archpriest of Epernay and was named canon of the chapter.
In July 1961 Carrière was named vicar general of Ste-Ménéhould and of Vitry-le-François and was appointed Domestic Prelate with the title of Monsignor in April, 1965.
At the age of 60, he was appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Laval on November 5, 1968, by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Labicum, on January 11, 1969, from Bishop René-Joseph Piérard, assisted by Bishops Charles-Marie-Jacques Guilhem and Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie Vilnet. On December 31, 1969, following the resignation of the named Bishop Guilhem, he succeeded to the See of Laval.
He served in office until the canonical age of 75, when he retired to Châlons sur Marne, on March 10, 1984. Since 1997, he lived in a home for elderly priests in Châlons.
Bishop Paul-Louis Carrière died at the venerable age of 99, only one month short of his one hundredth birthday on Thursday, February 21, 2008. His remains were interred in the bishops' vault behind the Main Altar of Laval's Sainte-Trinité Cathedral, following the celebration of a Requiem Mass, led by Msgr. Pierre d'Ornellas, Archbishop of Rennes on February 27, at 15 hrs.
