Born Karl Barthruff in Germany, and raised as a Lutheran, he originally studied to become an architect, but following the death of his father, he was forced to give up his studies.

Emigrating to New York, where he worked as a baker, he hoped to earn enough money to return to Germany and resume his studies. However, whilst in the States, he converted to Catholicism and two years later entered the Capuchin novitiate in Detroit, receiving the religious name of Accursius. He was a great cook, and his special dishes included dumpling soups and potato pancakes. He always seemed to find time for other tasks, including painting, laying concrete and even installing heating systems. Going fishing with his friends was his favorite past time.

Accursius suffered from stomach cancer for many years, and died on the morning of January 1, 1946, aged 71, after 52 years of religious life.
