Born Edmund Blong on a Farm in St. Lucas, Iowa, he attended St. Lawrence's College and entered the Capuchin novitiate at Huntington, receiving the religious name of Flavian. He taught moral theology and homiletics at Marathon, and served in the vocational office.

In 1954, under his direction, Saint Francis's Brothers School was established for candidates who wanted to pursue the lay expression of Capuchin life. After returning to Marathon, where Flavian served as for two years as director of students, he became involved in retreat ministry. He was highly successful in building up the retreats at Queen of Angels Retreat in Saginaw. In his later years he ministered as chaplain to various communities of religious sisters and was held in high esteem for his faithful and dedicated service.

During his last years in retirement at St. Fidelis in Appleton, he impressed everyone by his affability. Friar Flavian underwent surgery to repair an aneurysm. He seemed to be recovering, but then suffered a setback and was readmitted to the Hospital in Appleton, where he passed away on January 6, 1995, aged 80, after 62 years of religious life and 55 of priesthood.
