Bertram Grismer died at Crown Point in 1973, at age 80, after 57 years of religious life.

Bertram was born in Minnesota. Before becoming a Capuchin, he worked as a brick layer and as a traction, combustion and steam engineer.

After becoming a Capuchin, Bertram lived in many Capuchin friaries, and served as cook, tailor, sacristan, gardener, and maintenance person. Although he was an excellent cook and skilled in many ways, none of his assignments lasted very long, due in part to health problems and in part to his character.

Bertram often asked permission to buy the newest products. At some point, however, he began to collect things just for the sake of possessing them, and sought out personal benefactors to keep his private supplies well-stocked. As his age advanced and his health declined, an amazing transformation began to take place: Bertram began giving things away.

He was fond of saying that when it was time for him to die, the Angel Gabriel would come for him. Whenever someone would knock on his door, he would answer, "Is that the Angel Gabriel?" Gabriel finally came and took Bertram to the place where he now possesses everything he could possibly want, in abundance.
