Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Shittsu, Joseph Asajirô Satowaki entered seminary in Nagasaki, pursuing later his studies at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum in Rome and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Ordained priest in Rome in December 1932, back in Nagasaki he served among others as episcopal chancellor, vicar general, director of the diocesan journal and rector of the seminary. Elected as the first bishop of the diocese of Kagoshima in 1955, he received his episcopal consecration in Nagasaki in May of that year. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Nagasaki on December 19, 1968, he was succesively named president of the Episcopal Conference of Japan in 1978. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal with the title of Santa Maria della Pace in his first consistory on June 30, 1979, becoming thus the third Japanese to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. During his episcopate in Nagasaki, the diocesan seminary was established in 1989 and the congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of the Annunciation instituted. Retiring from office in 1990, the Cardinal passed away of brain tumour at the St. Francis Hospital in Nagasaki and was interred in accordance with his wishes with the priests of his former archdiocese at the Akagi Bochi: "the cemetery by the red tree".
