Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in the city of Hachiōji, Tokyo, Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi received his education at the Gyosey junior school, the seminary of Tokyo and the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome, earning doctorates in philosophy and canon law. Ordained priest in Tokyo in December 1954, he performed pastoral ministry in the archdiocese, being named auxiliary to its ordinary, Peter Tatsuo Doi at the early age of thirty seven in 1966, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Atenia in May of that year. Appointed coadjutor, with right of succession to the same archbishopric in 1969, he was transferred to the titular see of Castro, and eventually succeeded to the metropolitan see on February 21 of the following year following Doi's death. President of the Episcopal Conference of Japan between 1983 and 1992, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of November 26, 1994, with the title of Santa Emerenziana a Tor Fiorenza. Resigning his office in the year 2000, Shirayanagi spent his last days in a home for elderly priests run by the Jesuits in Tokyo after suffering from cardiac arrhythmia and a light cerebral hemorrhage. He passed unexpectedly away due to a myocardial infarction a week after moving to Loyola House. Following the celebration of a funeral mass, his body was cremated and his ashes interred beside other members of the clergy inside Fuchū's Catholic Cemetery.
