Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Bombay, Joseph Cordeiro entered seminary in Kandy, Ceylon, later pursuing his studies at the University of Oxford. Ordained priest in August 1946, he was named president of St. Francis Xavier High School in Quetta in 1951 and successively rector of the Minor Seminar of Karachi in 1953. Appointed archbishop of Karachi in 1958, Cordeiro received his episcopal consecration on August 24 of that year. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest with the title of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in the consistory of March 5, 1973, becoming thus the first prelate from Pakistan to the elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. President of the Episcopal Conference of Pakistan from 1958 until his death in 1994, the Cardinal passed away of cancer. The "Cardinal Cordeiro Cricket Tournament" was initiated by the Christ the King Seminary of Karachi to promote religious vocations in 2008, while the "Cardinal Cordeiro High School" in Korangi Town, Karachi, was named after him in 2012.
