Francis Beekmeyer, who would rise to become Sri Lanka's first native bishop, was born in Matara and was ordained priest through the Silvestrine Congregation of the Benedictine Order on June 23, 1899. Appointed parish priest of Kandy on April 18 of the following year, he was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Kandy at thirty eight years of age by Pope Pius X on April 19, 1912, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following June 30.

Overseeing the extension of Catholic education by establishing and improving Catholic schools, Bishop Bede succumbed to a lingering illness in 1935 at sixty one years of age while still in office.
