Former Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Manila, Philippines, Msgr. Gabriele Martelino Reyes was born in Calivo on March 24, 1892, and entered St. Vincent Ferreri's Seminary in Jaro, during the Episcopate of Bishop Frederick Rooker. He was ordained priest on March 27, 1915, and managed to establish parochial schools and published the newspaper "Diaro-Kanbuhi Sar Banua". In 1920, he became chancellor of Jaro, then vicar general, later appointed the first Filipino bishop of Cebu, an appointment he received at the age of 40, on July 29, 1932.

He received his episcopal consecration on October 11, from Archbishop Guglielmo Piani SDB., assisted by Bishops James Paul McCloskey and Alfredo Verzosa y Florentin. Appointed Archbishop of Cebu on April 28, 1934, and at the age of 57, was named auxiliary bishop of Manila with the title of Archbishop of the titular see of Phulli. He succeeded to the Metropolitan See of Manila on October 13, 1949, and was installed on the following day as the first Filipino in the post.

Among Archbishop Reyes's tangible achievements were the establishment of the San Carlos Seminary and the parochial schools. His vision to build a Catholic Center was realized by his successor with the building of the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center on U.N. Avenue in Manila. The Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Library (AGRM Library), the Resource Center of the San Carlos Pastoral Formation Complex, was dedicated in his honor, following his demise, which occurred on October 10, 1952, at the age of 60.
