Bishop Hermengild Li Yi OFM., clandestine Bishop of the Diocese of Lu'an was born in 1923, in Changzhi. Entering the Minor Seminary at the young age of 13, he joined the Franciscans and following his priesthood ordination on February 6, 1949, he taught at the School of Macao. In 1951, he entered the Tianjin University, specializing in history. After graduating in 1955, he engaged himself in pastoral work until 1958, when he returned to Changzhi's parish.

Jailed during the Cultural Revolution in 1966, for his beliefs, he was released in 1985, returning to his parish, to help restore the life of the Church. In 1998, he was secretly appointed and consecrated Bishop of Lu'an.

Bishop Li Yi passed away due to a cerebral infarction on Thursday, May 24, 2012, aged 88. His remains were buried at the Elizabethan Nunnery Cemetery in Changzhi.
