A native of Valletta, Malta, and member of the Augustinian Order, Father Alphonse Cauchi OSA., D.D., J.C.L., worked for many years among the Maltese community in Toronto.

After having been Regent of St. Mark's Augustinian College in Rabat, Malta, from 1917 until 1920, he taught canon law at St. Monica's College, Rome, in 1920, but the following year moved to the United States where he worked with Maltese immigrants in New York and Detroit. He visited Toronto for the first time in 1925. During this visit he looked after the spiritual needs of the Maltese who seemed to have welcomed him very enthusiastically. In early January 1927, Father Cauchi gave a mission to the Maltese. In the summer of 1928, he was invited by Archbishop Neil McNeil to conduct a series of spiritual exercises for the Maltese in Toronto. It was on this occasion that the Archbishop invited him to stay and work among the Maltese in Toronto.

Archbishop McNeil, who understood the needs of the Maltese community in Toronto and supported the idea of having a Maltese priest in Toronto on a permanent basis, was instrumental in getting Father Cauchi to aid the Toronto Maltese. Father Cauchi eventually arrived in Toronto on July 7, 1929, and remained there until his death at the age of 64, following a lengthy illness on October 2, 1943. His funeral was held three days later with Msgr. James McGuigan, Archbishop of Toronto, acting as main celebrant. The funeral oration was delivered by Father J. Ryan. A final farewell in Maltese was delivered by Father Louis Micallef, who traveled from Detroit to pay his last respects and who eventually died soon afterwards on April 3 of the following year. More than fifty priests took part in the funeral which was watched and attended by nearly every Maltese in Toronto.
