A native of Saint-Jean, Nouveau-Brunswick, Monsignor William John Conway was ordained priest on May 12, 1901 in Québec. Curate of the Chatham's cathedral church for five years, he was appointed curate of the Immaculate Conception church of Edmundston in 1911, of which he saw its rebuilding once Edmundston became diocese, becoming its cathedral. Vicar General of the Diocese, Conway was a tireless builder. Apart from the cathedral, he oversaw the construction of the education center of Edmundston close to the cathedral and of the Orphanage Mont Sainte-Marie, whose management he entrusted to the Marist Sisters. Appointed Apostolic Protonotary with the title of Monsignor in 1955, he spent his last years in retirement at Mont Sainte-Marie and upon his death, was interred in the cathedral he constructed of which he served as curate for 53 years, beside the remains of Msgr. Marie-Antoine Roy OFM., First Bishop of Edmundston.
