The Third Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Ottawa, Monsignor Joseph-Médard Émard grew up in a family that would give two priests and three nuns to the Catholic Church. Ordained priest on June 10, 1876, he went to Rome to further his studies in theology and canon law at the Roman Seminary and returning back to Montréal with two doctorates, he served as diocesan chancellor for eight years. Professor of church history at the Université Laval and member of the Royal Society of Canada, Pope Leo XIII elected him bishop of the diocese of Valleyfield, Québec, receiving his episcopal consecration on June 9, 1892 from Archbishop Édouard-Charles Fabre.
Appointed archbishop of Ottawa on June 2, 1922, during his tenure he established ten deaneries, created five parishes, and founded the Petit Séminaire d'Ottawa in 1925. He died in office after an illness of several months aged 73.
