Belgian born Jean-Joseph Casot entered the Society of Jesus in Paris in 1753 and moved to New France as a lay brother in 1757, serving as cook at the Jesuit College of Québec. Noticing his capabilities, his superior Father Augustin-Louis de Glapion, appointed him bursar of the said college, while due to the shortage in the number of Jesuit priests, Bishop Jean-Olivier Briand ordained him priest on December 20, 1766. Confessor to the hospital nuns of the Hôtel-Dieu from 1783 to 1796, by the time of his death he was the last Jesuit present in Canada.
