Monsignor Eugenio Corecco was born in Airolo to Pietro Corecco and Margherita Beffa on October 3, 1931. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Chiasso, where his father worked at the local train station. Aged twelve, he entered the Seminary of San Carlo at Lugano, a month short of his father's unexpected demise. Msgr. Angelo Jelmini sent him to pursue further studies in Rome at the Pontifical Lombardian Seminary and was ordained presbyter by the named Monsignor Jelmini on October 2, 1955 in Bodio, a few months before earning his degree. The following year, Corecco was assigned within the parish of Prato Leventina and in 1957, military chaplain of the Reggimento Fanteria Montagna 30.

In October 1958 he left his Parish in order to undergo further studies at the University of Monaco, from where he obtained a doctorate 'summa cum laude' in 1962. In 1965 he earned a licentiate in civil law from the University of Freiberg, of which he was an active member of the Associazione Studentesca Lepontia Cantonale. After meeting Msgr. Luigi Giussani, he entered his famous movement, Comunione e Liberazione, which he tried to also establish in Switzerland. In October 1965, Corecco was named professor of canon law at the Major Seminary of Lugano and official of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal. He returned to Monaco in July 1967, where he served as assistant of the Faculty of Canon Law, an office he kept until his nomination as professor of the latter subject at Freiberg's University and between 1979 and 1981, held the chair of Dean of the Faculty of Theology. Together with Msgr. Angelo Scola, he co-founded the Theological Review «Communio», originally published in German on the initiative of Hans Urs von Balthasar and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Following his publications, he was asked to participate in several conferences and conventions, among which in a number of universities across Europe, including the Catholic University of Milan, the Protestant Theological Faculty of Geneva and the University of Perugia.

In 1980 Father Eugenio organized the Fourth International Congress of Canon Law in Freiberg in which took part over five hundred Professor of 54 different nationalities. In 1982, Pope John Paul II asked him to serve as an expert within the Commission for the Revision of the Code of Canon Law, promulgated in 1983. The Pope furthermore appointed him consulter of the Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the named code. He also served as member of the Episcopal Conference of Switzerland.

On May 31, 1986, the named John Paul II, appointed Corecco as Bishop of the Diocese of Lugano, Switzerland. He received his episcopal consecration from Msgr. Henry Schwery, Bishop of Sion and President of Switzerland's Episcopal Conference, future Cardinal, on June 29, of that same year, assisted by Bishops Pierre Mamie and Ernesto Togni.

Bishop Corecco worked hard among the teenagers of his diocese, organizing among others for them several pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to several renowned sanctuaries. He founded a diocesan commission for Social Communications and renovated the direction of the «Giornale del Popolo». In Autumn 1987 he inaugurated the Liceo Diocesano within the Collegio Pio XII which he left under the direction of the Salesian Fathers.

His impeccable and keen interest in pastoral, scientific and humanitarian fields culminated with the foundation of the Theological Academy of Lugano. He furthermore erected the Ecclesiastical Foundation Monsignor Vincenzo Molo in 1991, and presided the AMATECA, publishing several manuals of Catholic Theology. The University of Lublin conferred him with a doctorate 'honoris causa' in April 1994.

Back in April 1992 his first cancer diagnosis appeared. Corecco turned worse by December 1993. He kept however his pastoral ministry until his demise, which occurred on Ash Wednesday on March 1, 1995, at the age of 61, in Lugano, from advanced stages of cancer complications. His body was interred inside the crypt of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, beside his predecessors.
