In 1939, Fontana was appointed professor of Italian Language within the named seminary and the following year, Bishop Angelo Giuseppe Jelmini named him vice–rector of the Diocesan Seminary.
Fontana succeeded his uncle, the Reverend Francesco Ferrari, as prior parish priest of Ligornetto, a position he kept until 1987, when he resigned due to health reasons.
After being admitted to a clinic due to poor health, he retired into a home for elderly, where he passed away at the age of 80, around midnight on Sunday, December 13, 1992.
His funeral Mass was held at Ligornetto, with the participation of several presbyters, local authorities and numerous parishioners and was successively interred inside the Avello Priorale of the Cemetery of Ligornetto.
A reserved character but a most humble and beloved priest, Don Ermanno was a keen musician, serving as well as organist of Lugano's Cathedral.
