Former Rector of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Minor Basilica of St. Sophia and of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) of St. Clement, both in Rome, Bishop Ivan Choma was born in Khyriv, Ukraine, on November 27, 1923, and was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on June 29, 1949, at 25 years of age.

Aged 53, Choma was consecrated Bishop of the Ukrainian See of Przemyśl by Cardinal Josyf Ivanovycè Slipyj, assisted by Bishops Ivan Prasko and Isidore Borecky, on April 2, 1977.

From 1965 until 1999, he served as lecturer of Church History at Ukrainian Catholic University of Rome and from 1985 till 2001, served as its rector. Bishop Choma served as Ssecretary to Patriarch Josyf Slipyj for many years, later being one of his biographers.

Resigning the pastoral government of his see on June 16, 1991, at 72 years of age he was appointed Bishop of the Titular See of Patara on February 22, 1996. Along the years, he collected numerous testimonies in regards of the martyrdoms the Catholic Church suffered in Ukraine under the Communist Rule.

Bishop Choma passed away at the Policlinico Gemelli of Rome on Friday, February 3, 2006, aged 82. In his last days, he was assisted by Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, with whom he concelebrated the Eucharist. The Cardinal Patriarch was with him at the time of death.

Obsequies for Bishop Ivan Choma were celebrated at the Minor Basilica of Saint Sophia in Rome on Tuesday, February 7.
