Born in Gordola, municipality in the district of Locarno in the Canton of Ticino in Switzerland, on October 12, 1910, Monsignor Corrado Cortella studied at the Diocesan Seminary of San Carlo of Lugano and later at the Seminary of Venegono and the University of Fribourg, prior to his ordination to the priesthood which took place at Lugano on May 22, 1937.

Performing pastoral ministry in Solduno, Pollegio and Porza, in 1942, Bishop Angelo Jelmini named him Diocesan Economist for the Diocese of Lugano, for which he successively served as Caritas Director from 1949 till 1980, Cathedral Rector between 1959 and 1969, Archpriest of the Chapter of San Lorenzo from 1959 until 1986, and Vicar General during the episcopate of Monsignor Eugenio Correcco from 1986 till 1991.

Contributing to the Consiglio del Clero, Centro Cattolico Radio TV, and Sinodo 72, Cortella served furthermore as secretary to the Episcopal Conference of Switzlerland, assistant of the Conferenze di San Vicenzo and military chaplain. He was also a renowned orator.

Named Prelate of Honor of His Holiness with the title of Monsignor in 1961, as of 2000, he resided at the Clinica San Rocco of Lugano due to health reasons, where he eventually passed away in March 2004, aged 93. According to his wishes, the Monsignor was interred in the family vault inside the cemetery of Muralto alongside his parents.
