During the 1950's and early 60's, Mung'andu served as parish priest and principal of the Kasisi Boys' School. Named vicar general of Lusaka in 1963 before being moved to a parish in Livingstone in 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Livingstone at 54 years of age, receiving his episcopal consecration on February 9, 1975, from Archbishop Luciano Angeloni, assisted by then Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo and Archbishop Adam Kozłowiecki SJ.
When the named Archbishop Milingo resigned from the pastoral government of his see, Mung'andu was named his successor by Pope John Paul II on January 9, 1984. Retiring from office on November 30, 1996, he passed away during the night of Monday, June 25, 2007, at Mina Medical Centre in Lusaka.
Known for his, vast culture, the Archbishop spoke five Zambian languages and held diplomas in social sciences from the University of London and in pastoral care from a college in Kansas City, USA.
