Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Upper Volta, present day Burkina Faso, Paul Zoungrana was the eldest of eight children. Receiving his early education from the White Sisters, he entered seminary in Pabré, later moving to that of Kuomi and eventually to Rome and Paris, where he frequented the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Institut Catholique. Ordained priest in May 1942, he joined the Society of Missionaries of Africa, commonly known as the White Fathers, in 1948. Forming part of the teaching staff of Kuomi's seminary between 1954 and 1959, he was elected archbishop of Ouagadougou by Pope John XXIII, becoming the first native to be appointed ordinary of the metropolitan see. Receiving his episcopal consecration from the Pope himself at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on May 8, 1960, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 22, 1965 with the title of San Camillo agli Orti Sallustiani, becoming thus Upper Volta's first cardinal. Retiring from office in June 1995, the Cardinal spent his remaining years in Ouagadougou.
