Stephen J. Sloop Jr., former pastor of Windermere Presbyterian Church, died Tuesday, February 14, 2006. He was born on February 18, 1942 in Annapolis, Brazil, where his parents, Stephen and Frances Sloop, were Presbyterian missionaries.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty Brown Sloop; his daughter, Anne Sloop Payne, son-in-law, Steve Payne, and granddaughter, Katie, of Wetumpka, Alabama; son, Scott Stephen Sloop of Atlanta, Georgia; and son, Ross McCain Sloop, daughter-in-law, Kira Sue Sloop, and grandsons, Jamie and Sandy of Atlanta; as well as a large and loving extended family.

Steve was a Presbyterian pastor who served churches in Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina for 35 years. After retirement from Windermere, he served as one of the supply pastors at Black River Presbyterian Church in Sampson County.

He earned his BA degree from Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, the M.Div and D.Min degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. In addition to his pastoral service, he had also worked in the field of alcohol and drug rehabilitation. In Wilmington, he served on the New Hanover Human Relations Commission. He and Betty were members of the national board of the Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment (ACME).

A service of praise and celebration of life for friends and family will be held at Windermere Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18. In accordance with his wishes, Steve's body was given as a gift to Duke Medical Center. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Steve's honor to Windermere designated for Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.
