Author, Professional Magician. He gained popularity as a prolific American author after graduating in 1920 from Colgate University. Originally, he worked as a newspaperman and composer of crosswords and other puzzles. In 1931, he created the pulp-fiction character The Shadow, for which he wrote more than 300 novel-length stories, published under the pen name Maxwell Grant. He was the ghost-writer for numerous books on magic and spiritualism by Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Joseph Dunninger, and the Amazing Kreskin. He authored more than 100 books on magic, psychic phenomena, true crime, mysteries, rope knots, yoga, hypnotism, and games. He also wrote five novels in the Biff Brewster juvenile adventure series of the 1960s. He was elected into the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame.
