US Congressman, United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McKenna moved to California with his family when he was a child. Soon after being admitted to the bar in 1865, he served as District Attorney of Solano County from 1866 until 1868. In 1875 he was elected to the California State Assembly serving until 1876. In 1885 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California's 3rd District until 1892, when he was appointed a judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In 1897 he was appointed Attorney General of the United States on the cabinet of President William McKinley. A year later in 1898, he was appointed by President McKinley as a justice on the United States Supreme Court, serving until his resignation due to health in 1925.
