Statesman and one of the founders of the proprietary Virginia Company of London, which in 1607 established the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States in the colony of Virginia, based at Jamestown. M.P. from Stockridge from 1604 to 1611, together with Sir Francis Bacon held to be "two men of the greatest parts and knowledge in England". He was member of Parliament in 1586, and sat in the first Parliament of James I, in 1604, becoming prominent through his attacks on the monopolies. In 1613 he became the object of royal displeasure when he set forth the principle that there were constitutional limits to the power of both king and people.
