Alfred Leland was born Abraham Alfred Lazarus on 20 June 1864 at New Chum, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, the third of the five children on Barnet and Dina (nee Abrahams) Lazarus. His father was a Polish immigrant who made his fortune in the Bendigo goldfields. Abraham trained as a doctor.
He married Eugenie Gollin on 8 June 1892 in North Adelaide, at the house of her brother Walter. They moved to the UK and he changed his name to Alfred Leland in 1903.
There were three children: Walter (1893 - 1915, killed at Gallipoli), Neil (1899 - 1971) and Dorothy. (1903 - 1963).
