Anton Clifford was born Anton Kloepfer in Baden Wurtemburg, Germany in 1838. He emigrated with his family to the United States in 1840. He is the younger brother of Bernhardt Kloepfer (and five others) who kept the name Kloepfer.

The Wilmette Historical Society has a copy of Anton's death certificate listing his name as Anton Clifford Or Kloepfr.
