Sarah Ervin was married to Joseph Matlick in 1803 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. According to family lore the wedding ceremony was attended by a band of Indians. Around 1816 the family left Somerset for Preston County, West Virginia, where Sarah's brother Isaac Ervin had settled earlier. Joseph and Sarah had the following children: Mary, William, Julia, Lydia, Samuel, Delilah, Joseph, Josiah, John, Zachariah, and Elijah. Several of the grown sons went to Scotland County, Missouri in the 1840's. Joseph and Sarah soon followed and settled near Sand Hill.

Gravesite Details

Sarah's original headstone is no longer standing. A new stone was installed by a descendant of Joseph and Sarah with the earlier spelling of the family name.
