The son of Arnold James McGinnis and Gertrude May Wolfe McGinnis, he was killed by the accidental discharge of a rifle while transporting fodder to feed the family livestock. By family story, the rifle had been placed into the barrel of feed and as the wagon bounced along, the trigger was either hit or jammed, thus causing the shot that killed James. He died instantly.
James made little notations in small notebooks, some are bits of poetry & sayings he liked. His tiny pocket notebook and the pictures were kept by his brother William, who never forgot James or Anna Belle.
He was the brother of William Thomas, Anna Belle, Harley Clifford, and Jesse Boyd McGinnis of Tunnelton, Preston county, WV.
