shared the hardships and discomforts of Gen. Burnside's infamous "Mud March", 20-24 Jan 1863

The 1st Maine Cavalry fought in more battles than any other organization in the Army of the Potomac and sustained the highest losses in battle of any Cavalry Regiment in the Civil War: 15 officers and 159 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded in battle.
In addition, 3 officers and 341 enlisted men died of disease.
In all, the First Maine Cavalry lost 518 soldiers.
Another 145 men died in Confederate prisons.
