Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 1st Maine Volunteer Cavalry, having been commissioned Major of the regiment on October 5, 1861. Promoted to Colonel on March 26, 1863, he led the Army of the Potomac's 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of the Cavalry Corps from May 13, 1863 until June 7, 1863. He was then subsequently killed in action during the June 17, 1863 Battle of Aldie, Virginia.
