Actor. Born in New York City, his early career consisted largely of supporting stage roles, but in 1954 he made his television debut in the series 'Mayor of the Town,' and afterward became an almost ubiquitous character actor in that medium, appearing in nearly 50 television programs during the 1950s such as 'Captain Midnight,' 'My Friend Flicka,' 'Medic,' 'Father Knows Best,' 'The Millionaire,' 'Maverick,' 'The Many Loves of Dobey Gillis,' 'Rawhide,' and 'Peter Gunn.' At the same time he appeared in several feature films, such as 'Somebody Up There Likes Me' (1956), 'Saddle the Wind' (1958) and 'North by Northwest (1959), often in uncredited roles. His most notable film role were probably in 1961's 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and 'Requiem for a Heavyweight' (1962). Through the 1960s he became an almost constant presence on television appearing over eighty roles in such series as 'Dennis the Menace,' 'Ben Casey,' 'The Rifleman,' 'The Andy Griffith Show,' 'The Untouchables,' 'Bonanza,' 'Perry Mason,' 'The Addams Family,' 'The Dick van Dyke Show,' and appeared in multiple roles in such series as 'The Twilight Zone,' 'Wagon Train,' 'Gunsmoke,' 'McHale's Navy,' and recurring roles in 'The Lucy Show' and 'Batman' in which he played Captain Courageous. Most notable, however, was probably the role of Cyrano Jones in the 1967 'Star Trek' episode, 'The Trouble with Tribbles.' He is probably more closely identified with this role than any other, and he went on to reprise it in the 1973 'Star Trek' animated series episode, 'More Trouble with Tribbles,' and archive footage of his appearance in 'The Trouble with Tribbles' was used in a 1996 episode of 'Deep Space Nine' entitled 'Trials and Tribble-ations.' He continued to work throughout the 1970s, with appearances on 'The Ghost and Mrs Muir,' 'The Odd Couple,' 'Mannix,' 'Ironside, 'Love American Style,' 'Emergency!' 'Adam-12,' 'Delvecchio,' and 'One Day at a Time.' He also appeared in several more notable feature films during his career, including 'Studs Lonigan' (1960), 'Lilies of the Field' (1963), 'Critic's Choice' (1963), 'Ship of Fools' (1965), 'Nevada Smith' (1966), and his last role, the 1977 western 'The Great Gundown.' He died as a result of a self inflicted gunshot at the age of 62, something that has been attributed to a severe depression which resulted from chronic pain from a back injury sustained a few years earlier, which had apparently reduced his ability to work. In addition to his acting, he was also credited as a writer for several series during his career, including seven episodes of 'Mister Ed,' four episodes of 'The Flying Nun,' and episodes for 'Bonanza,' 'Star Trek,' and 'Mannix.'
