Garwood - Services for Kenneth M. Bowlby, 81, of 347 Myrtle Ave, Garwood, were conducted by Rev. Stephen Szabo, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Monday from the Gray Funeral Home, 318 E. Broad St., Westfield. Interment was in Fairview Cemetary, Westfield.
Mr. Bowlby died March 10 at Runnells Hospital, Berkeley Heights.
Born in Montclair (CORRECTION: see footnote below), he lived in Garwood more than 50 years. He was employed many years as an engineer by the Mack Truck Co, Plainfield, until retiring in 1962. Mr. Bowlby was an Army veteran of World War I, with service in the Mexican campaign and in France. He was past master of Jeruselem Lodge 36, F & AM, and a member of the Crescent Temple in Trenton. A volunteer at Runnells Hospital, he had accumulated over 8,000 hours of service.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Josephine Wahl Bowlby, three sons, John E. and Kenneth M. Jr., both of Garwood and Robert K. of Westfield, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
FOOTNOTE: My grandfather, Kenneth M Bowlby, Sr., was born Kenneth M Rathell, in Maryland. He and his brother John (Rathell) Barnett were raised by their "aunt" Sarah E Barnett, who later married George M Bowlby. As of this date, I have not been able to find out who their biological parents were, although I suspect that Sarah was actually their biological mother.
