Served in both the 2nd and 20th Maine Infantry Regiments in the Civil War.

Mr. Lufkin was a 25 year old married Teacher from Orrington when he enlisted as a Private on 6 Aug 1862. He mustered to active duty with Co. C; 2nd Infantry Regiment; Me. Volunteers the same day. At the time he stood 5' 10" with light brown hair & blue eyes.

On 20 May 1863 he transferred to Co. B; 20th Inf. Regt., Me. Vols. During 1864 he transferred to Co. G of the same Regiment. He was discharged 1 Jul 1865 to take a promotion & command.

On 20 Jun 1864 he was appointed by the Secretary of War to become the commander of Co. B; 45th Infantry Regiment; U.S. Colored Troops. He accepted the appointment and was mustered in 7 Jul 1864 as a Captain. He served until Honorably mustered out 4 Nov 1865.

On 2 Jun 1889 he made application# 683.626 for a Veteran's Invalid Pension. The 1890 Veteran's Census showed he had accumulated a number of debilities.
