John D'Allara, 47 years old, Rescue at the North Tower

John D'Allara was born on August 26, 1954 to Helen and John D'Allara. He had a twin brother, Dan. He grew up in the Bronx, NY, and lived in Pearl River, NY, in adulthood. John attended and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and Lehman College with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1978 and a Master's degree in Physical Education in 1988. Before joining the NYPD, John worked as a professional bodybuilder from 1973 to 1978 and a physical education teacher at Columbus High School, Roosevelt High School, and Park West High School from 1978 to 1983. John was also a volunteer firefighter for the Pearl River Hook & Ladder Company. John married his sweetheart, Carol D'Allara on September 24, 1988. They had two sons together, Johnny, age 7, and Nicholas, age 3 (at the time of John's passing). John was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his family. He was not only a hero to countless people and animals during his work with NYPD's Emergency Service Unit, but he was a hero to his family as well.

John worked as a police officer for the New York Police Department's Emegency Aervice Unit. He was accepted to the police academy in January of 1985 and graduated in June, working as an officer for eighteen years and in the Emergency Unit for fourteen. John had wanted to be a police officer since his childhood and he loved his job. Throughout his policing career, he received several awards and commendations for meritorious duty. On the morning of September 11, 2001, John responded to the disaster at the World Trade Center with the Emergency Services Unit, one of the first units to respond on the scene. He entered the North Tower to help and rescue the injured and trapped civilians inside the building. John was still inside the North Tower upon its collapse and unfortunately did not survive.
