He had attained the age of 63 years, 8 months and 29 days. for ten years Mr. Barnett has been sadly afflicted with eye troubles and all efforts made to cure them have given but little relief. Two years ago he suffered an attack of heart failure and has since been troubled with it frequently. They past two weeks death was expected momentarily. He was unconscious of his surroundings for sixteen hours before the dissolution.
The funeral took place this afternoon at half past one o'clock from the family residence. Services were conducted by Presiding Elder W.E. Ravenscroft.
Alfred P. Barnett, was the youngest of a family of nine children born to Thomas and Penelopie Barnett. His father was a native of North Carolina and his mother was a Tennessean. They came to this county in 1814, and lived the winter of that year in a log cabin north of the old fair grounds. The following spring they entered an 80-acre claim in Hamel township, and lived there until death. Alfred P. was born June 8, 1833, and has been a continuous resident of the county since, except the time that he, accompanied by his brother Rufus went to California in 1852 remaining a year. On July 30, 1857 he was married to Ellen Kinder, daughter of Wm. Kinder. To this union nine children were born, all of whom survive, viz: Wm. Barnett, of Cumberland county; Medora, wife of John Blackburn, of Hamel; Joseph A., May, wife of Samuel Sterling; R.N. of Shelbina, Mo.; John A.P., Oscar, Jennie, wife of James Stallman, and George. Five years ago he retired from active work and purchased the handsome residence on Kansas street, which has since been his home. The pupils of the Leclaire Academy, which two of his children attend, adopted memorial resolutions and appointed a committee to attend the funeral.
