Education: Graduated from Topeka High School. Attended Kansas State University with a degree in Physical Education in 1953. Received her Master's degree from Kansas University in 1967.
Her teaching career started as a physical education substitute teacher in Topeka High School; then to Highland Park and one year at Seaman High School. She finished her career at Washburn University where she retired after 33 years of service.
Jan's accomplishments at Washburn University included: development and organization of the women's intercollegiate athletic program; she was the first head coach in gymnastics, field hockey, basketball softball and volleyball. Jan also served athletic coordinator and Washburn representative to the Association for intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Jan studied European physical education at the University of Oslo, Norway the summer of 1971. She was a trustee for the Washburn Endowment Assoc. from 2001-2004 serving on the Finance Committee. Janet was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame on October of 1988 and Highland Park Teachers Hall of Fame in 1995.
Community Service: Service on the Athletic Committee, Catalog Revision Committee, Capital Campaign Distinguished Women's Lecture Series, Zonta Club of Topeka, Delta Theta Chi Sorority, Heartland Brand Huntington's Disease Foundation and Shawnee Girl Scout Jamboree Instructor.
Interest: She and her husband have visited most European countries including Finland and Russia, and the highlight of their travels was around the world in 45 days in 2007.
Survived By: Her spouse Carl, her brother, Louis; her sister Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: Parents George and Mildred Steck; sister, Nancy G. Lavigne; brother-in-law, John Nuzman.
Memorial Service: A Memorial Service held on Saturday, August 30, 2014. at the First United Methodist Church of Topeka, Kansas.
