Born in Kentucky, January 31, 1938, to Orvis and Fannie Angel, he was raised on the family farm. Evan was a hard worker all of his life, mostly holding two jobs. After graduating from Woodbine High School, he joined the Air Force. He started basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX; then was stationed at Sewart AFB, Smyrna, TN; Ankara, Turkey; Cannon AFB, Clovis, NM; Eglin AFB, FT. Walton Beach, FL; and then the Pentagon where he served his remaining years till retiring after 20yrs of service earning the following decorations during his career: Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity of Service Award with 4 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He then moved across the Potomac River and joined the United States Capitol Police. While working at the Capitol he also held a part-time job at Grand Union/Safeway. Retiring from both of these jobs, he just couldn't stay away from work, and subsequently started a new position as a security officer at Mount Vernon Estate to keep himself busy.
He was an avid hunter and long-time member of the Rod and Gun Club at Quantico, VA. He spent many days in his favorite hunting spot B-6. He enjoyed many days traveling back and forth along Skyline Drive and staying at Brookside with his wife, Fran. He loved the serenity and beautiful views and the wildlife that they found there.
Evan was an eternal optimist, devoted husband, loving father and wonderful pop-pop. He is survived and missed by his wife of 13 years, Fran Burke-Angel, his daughters from his previous marriage Joyce (Chris Rogers) and Pam (Jared Bergeron); and his step-children Heather (Chris Blackmun) and Ryan Burke; his sisters Wilma, and her husband, Bill Partin, and Sarah, and her husband, Artman Hart. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Kevin, Evan, Alex, Faith and Cassandra. And last but not least, his precious "babies," his kitties, Fawnie and Callie.
It was Evan's sense of humor, his ability to bring out the best in people and his incredible dedication to his commitments that made him so endearing to others. Evan was a "good ole country boy" who, when greeted, would often say "I'm as fine as a frog hair split twice!" He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The funeral service was held March 5, 2010 at Jefferson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria, VA. His final resting spot is at Arlington National Cemetery, which is fittingly, between the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon. Interment was held on May 21, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
