Clara Ana Wilhemina Wessel was the ninth child of Johann Heinrich Gottlieb Wessel and Marie Sophia (Doht) Wessel.

Clara married Francis "Frank" Marion Backman (son of Charles Albert Backman and Fredricka Nuzman) on August 1, 1908 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Together they had two sons, Raymond Francis Backman and Donald Charles Backman.
