Daughter of John and Dora (Dill) Hicks, who were married Feb. 12, 1903 in Benton County, Arkansas.
Graduate of Northeastern State College in Tahlequah. Miss Hicks taught Senior English at Broken Arrow High School for many years. In retirement, she lived at Go Ye Village in Tahlequah. It was there at Go Ye Village that she met Sanford Kent Bailey. The two were married in Tahlequah on December 19, 1996. Marie was 89; Kent was 90.

Tahlequah, OK. - Funeral services for Phoebe "Marie" Hicks Bailey, age 92, of Tahlequah will be held Monday, June 29th at 10:00 a.m in Hart Funeral Home Chapel with David Deffenbaugh and Lloyd Coppedge officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Serving as pallbearers will be John DeSteiguer, Rudy Waldroop, Frank Chapman, Ernest Johnson, Tom Rogers, Charles Vanlandingham, R.H. Molloy and Jim Kaufman.
Marie was born May 27, 1906 in Decatur, Arkansas, the daughter of John and Dora (Dill) Hicks and died Friday, June 26, 1998 in Go Ye Village Medical Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Marie was very active in the College Street Church of Christ and teaching children the word of God was one of her greatest joys. Her Vacation Bible School activities included dressing as a Bible character as she taught class. She also taught many ladies' classes in Broken Arrow and Tahlequah. Marie was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was recently awarded a pin and certificate for her 50 years of service.
Marie graduated from Northeastern State University and received her Masters degree from Oklahoma State University. A beloved schoolteacher, she often said, "Every person is able to do something and it is up to the teacher to find out what that something is."
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dora Hicks, her brother, O.J. Hicks and nephew, Neal Hicks.
She is survived by her husband, S. Kent Bailey of Go Ye Village in Tahlequah, her cousin Nancy Schubert and husband, Floyd, of Tahlequah, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
