Private First Class Sanford was a member of the 29th Engineer Topographical Battalion serving in the Philippines. On August 14, 1953 he was killed by Communist Huk rebels. He was listed as Missing in Action.

[The family] received a telegram in August 1953, notifying them that their son, brother and husband had been classified as missing in action after he reportedly was taken and presumed killed by members of the Hukbalahap Rebellion...
The family pushed for the government to search for Sanford, but the U.S. later discontinued its efforts after classifying him killed in action...
The Philippine Army found several of Archie's personal effects in a Huk village, including his dog tags, camera, some clothing, wedding photos and even a letter... but no signs of his body...
Sanford received the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
