Died of a cerebral hemorrhage and "the French disease".
A cenotaph for him appears in the Soong Ching-ling Memorial Park. There is no historic evidence that he was relocated to that site.
COLORADO , Feb. 16 - After days of anxious waiting to learn just how her son, Garrard Hargrove died in Shanghai, China, on Jan 31, Mrs. R. P. Hargrove [sic] of Colorado has received a letter stating that his death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Before the letter came, Mrs. Hargrove had known only her son was dead, having been so informed by a message from the navy department in Washington on Feb. 4. Hargrove was in the naval reserves, having been transferred from regular navy service in 1933 after 16 years of active service. He and his wife operated a cafe in the International Settlement before the Sino-Japanese fighting in Shanghai. Hargrove was buried in the Hung-jao Road cemetery in Shanghai, according to the letter received by his mother. Mrs. Hargrove does not plan to have his body moved to the states.
