Son of John Griggs, Jr. and Nancy Barnett of Vernon Co., MO. He married Sarah Jane Rose on Jan. 14, 1858, in Vernon Co., MO.

Known children: James F., Nancy Ann, Hiram, Eliza Eleanor, John Samuel, Isabell M.,Mary Priscella Adkins, William Riley Griggs and Essie May.

Essie May born ca. 1881 married Mitchell Woolery (1868 - 1948).

He served in the Missouri State Guards Co. 11 Reg't, was wounded at the Battle of Wilson Creek and lost a leg.

He was the gatekeeper on the Toll Road to Ashland, Boone Co., MO. ("Missouri "B" Counties and the German Regiment, MO Volunteers, & Bates Co., MO Civil War Veterans," contributed by Daphne L. Griggs Humphrey.")

Shelby Smith Griggs was born 13 July 1828 in Bates Co.MO. He married Sarah Jane Rose 14 Jan 1858. They were the parents of nine children. He joined the MO State Guards and fought in the Battle of Wilson Creek. Shelby was in Co.I 1Reg't . He was wounded and lost a leg. He returned to Boone Co. where he was gate keeper of the Toll Bridge near Ashland MO. He died 27 Feb1903 and is buried at Nashville Baptist Church in the Sapp section. Daphne L Griggs Humphrey
