Born Melinda Lee Frisbee on June 26, 1949, her parents were Woodrow Robert Frisbee of Tennessee and Farine L. Farmer of North Carolina. She had a sister, Sue, and two brothers, Robert and Bill. She was married twice; her first marriage to Ron Downey produced two children, Kimberly Sue Downey and Shane Dale Downey. Her second husband was William Terry Hassig.

Melinda was killed by being shot several times in the head. At the time of her death was 23 years old. She was missing just before Christmas of 1973, and her body was found on January 21, 1973 in Riverside County. She was a resident of Redondo Beach, California.

Melinda was a beautiful person, both inside and out, whose life was ended too soon. She was a expert seamstress and a wonderful mother who cherished her children, and was the best friend to all who knew her.
