Based on the newspaper article published for her 100th birthday in 1948, it appears the stone has her birth year incorrect. The article below states she was born June 5, 1848. She would have been at least 104 when she died.

Mrs. Adeline Jenkins, 100 Today, Is Still Active - Mrs. Adeline Jenkins of E. Mason St., who will observe her 100th birthday today, fixed chicken and dumplings for supper last night. "I have done a heap of work in my day," she said, "but now I have to take things a little easier. I still can do my own housecleaning, cooking and washing and I have a little garden this year, not so big but with plenty of flowers."

Mrs. Jenkins has received many cards and congratulatory messages from friends in Springfield, St. Louis and Chicago. Members of her Sunday school class of St. Paul's A.M.E. church will hold open house for her tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. at her residence. All members of Mrs. Jenkins family are deceased and she resides alone with the exception of a roomer who has resided at her home the last eight years.

Mrs. Jenkins, who has enjoyed extremely good health for her advanced years, painted her house when she was 98 years old "with a little help for the high places," as she explains.

She was born in slavery June 5, 1848, in Scott county, Missouri, and resided in Cairo before moving to Springfield more than 60 years ago. Her husband, Frank Jenkins, fought in the Civil war. Since his death 35 years ago [he actually died in 1900], Mrs. Jenkins has received a government pension as recognition for his services in the U. S. army. Mrs. Jenkins five children also preceded her in death. Published in the IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 6-5-1948
