Mrs. Blanche Burgess, 82, known to Haligonians for some 64 years for her work in the Salvation Army, died Friday at Pleasant View Villa in Dartmouth. She was the widow of Fred Burgess, of Halifax. Mrs Burgess, a member of the Salvation Army's Halifax Citadel Church since coming to the city in 1907 was responsible for the organization's youth work for approximately 40 years. She was a former Sunday School supervisor. In addition to her youth work, she was well known in Halifax's downtown area where for the whole of her career, she distributed the organization's magazine, The War Cry. She was also familiar in Halifax hospitals where she visited patients on Sundays. Born in Waterloo, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Jonas and Martha Weagle. She is survived by one brother Arthur of Halifax and two sisters, Lillian (Mrs Percy Trimper), North Brookfield, Hants County , and Vera (Mrs William Keddy), Derry, N.H. Besides her husband, one daughter Jean, predeceased her. The body is at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, Robie Street. Funeral Service will be Monday at 2 P.M. in the Barrington Street Salvation Army Citadel, Halifax, with commital service at the St John's cemetery. Capt Mr. Ryan of the Salvation Army will officiate.
