"Svan, Gustaf Johansson, b. 19 May 1807 in Risåsen, Sjötofta. Joined 9 Jan 1828. Height 5 feet 10 inches. Requested and was given dismissal to support. Served well. Died 10 Jul 1857. His wife Agneta is the sister of soldier No. 936 Josef Fyhr in South Kind Company and No. 871 Svenning Qvist. [His son Johan Ubbe was soldier No. 935 in South Kind Company.]"

(From Hallqvist, Ingvar, "Norra Kinds kompanis indelta soldater Kungl Älvsborgs Regemente" [North Kind company of soldiers of the Royal Älvsborg Regiment], p. 170)

Official parish birth and death records say he was born 27 May 1807 and died 10 Sep 1857.

He was born Gustaf Johansson, but when he entered military service he was assigned the name Svan (Swan). Receiving a new unique "military name" was a common practice then in Sweden to make the soldiers more easily identifiable, as many of them were named Johansson, Andersson, or Svensson and the like at birth.
