Eber H. Bly was born in Ticonderoga, New York in 1830 and married Frances Baker, of Pulaski, New York, in 1856. His only daughter, Harriet S. Bly was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1948.
When the Northern Pacific Railroad was built westward to the state of Washington from Carlton, Minnesota, 1870-1883, one of the contractors who helped build the road was Eber H. Bly. He arrived in Brainerd, Minnesota in September of 1871 and erected Bly's Store which was one of the first general mercantile buildings in Brainerd. His store was located on the first floor and the second floor was used for theatricals, dances and political rallies; the attic was used by various lodges. From January 1, 1873 to May 1874, Eber Bly served as Brainerd's first Mayor. In 1877 Bly moved his business enterprises to Bismarck, North Dakota.
