Unity – Mrs. Avis Smith died Thursday afternoon at the Sisters Hospital in Waterville after a brief illness. She was born in Presque Isle October 17, 1914, the daughter of Thomas and Lizzie Walton Hemphill of Thorndike.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Unity from Belfast about four years ago. She had taught in the village grade school for the past two years and taught a Sunday School class at Unity Union Church.
Surviving are her husband, Montcena Smith; sons Clayton and Melvin of Unity; her parents; three sisters, Ethel and Edith Hemphill of Thorndike, and Mrs. Thelma Whitehouse of Unity.
Services were held at the Thorndike Church at 2 o'clock Sunday. Rev. Walter Towle officiated. Interment was in the family lot in the Pond Cemetery in Unity. Bearers were Emery Nutter, Edgar Cole, Harold Parkhurst and Maynard Stevens.
