Gertrude was the daughter of Patrick and Mabel Hunt Whelan.
Her name waas Muriel Gertrude Frances Whelan, but she was always known as "Gert" or "Gertrude"

Patrick (nicknamed "Pete")and Mabel were married in 1898 in St. Cecilia's Church, Back Bay, where Patrick had served as an altar boy. He was 21; she was 19 when they were married.
Patrick's sister, Margaret, made Mabel's wedding dress. His sister Elizabeth was a bridesmaid.

Gertrude Whelan was born in Boston, Mass., and attended Roxbury Mission Elementary School. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Boston and Boston Teachers College where she received a Master's Degree.

Gertrude lived in Jamaica Plain for most of her adult life and taught Spanish in the Boston school system for 42 years. She taught in East Boston High School for 15 years and eventually in Roslindate High School where she finished 42 years of teaching.

Gertrude retired to South Yarmouth, Cape Cod. She was a very devout Catholic.

Gertrude's siblings were

Hilary H. Whelan, who studied for the priesthood but left and got his degree at Boston College. He became a counselor at Westwood High School. He married Marguerite O'Brien. He died at age 65, November 26, 1967, of cancer.

Gerald Whelan who was born 25 Dec 1906. He left for the Seminary at age 13 and was ordained in 1932. He taught Latin and Greek in high school, was a missionary priest, and served as a Chaplain during World War II. He was shipwrecked and miraculously rescued after 7 hours in a crowded lifeboat in the North Atlantic.

Gerald served 3 addition years as a Major in Iceland. After leaving the service, he became Rector of the First Redemptionist Church in Rochester, New York; then President of St. Mary's College. Lastly, he served as pastor of Our Lady of the Mount, a one priest parish on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Gerald died 24 March 1985 and is buried ion Old Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, with other priests.

Mary Whelan who was secretary to the President of United Drug Co. She married Sylvester Fassnacht in Indiana.

Another sibling, Mabel A. Whelan, was born 28 March 1900 in Rhode Island. She died at age 2.
